Who Was Antonio Armstrong?
Antonio Donnell Armstrong (October 15, 1973 – July 29, 2016) was an American football linebacker who played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) and the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was born in Houston, Texas, and attended Texas A&M University, where he was a two-time All-Southwest Conference (SWC) selection.
Armstrong was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the sixth round of the 1995 NFL Draft. He played in four games for the 49ers in 1995 but was waived by the team at the end of the season. In 1998, Armstrong signed with the British Columbia Lions of the CFL. He made an immediate impact as a starter for two seasons with the team and was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 1999.
In 2000, Armstrong was traded to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He was Winnipeg's defensive player of the year and an East Division All-star in 2000. However, he suffered a career-ending fracture of his left ankle in October of that year. Armstrong retired from professional football in 2001. He later worked as a high school football coach in Houston.
On July 29, 2016, Armstrong and his wife, Dawn, were shot and killed in their home in Houston. Their 16-year-old son, Antonio Armstrong Jr., was arrested and charged with capital murder. Armstrong Jr. is currently awaiting trial. Antonio Armstrong was a talented football player who had a promising career ahead of him.
